From "The Sioux County Herald" Orange City, Iowa 2 November 1898: "Another Old Settler Passes Away. Thursday morning, Ocober 27, at 1:30am, A.J. Lenderink quitely and serenely passed away. For ten days prior to his demise those nearest and dearest to him were constantly gathered about his bed hourly expecting the appearance of the grim destroyer, hence his death was not unexpected - but "death is saddest when it comes" and in this case, as in all others, it brought deep grief to the relatives and friends. For seventeen years, the subject of this obituary, has been a helpless invalid, during which time the bereaved wife has faithfully and tenderly administered to his every want, and on this account, if possible, he is more sorely missed from the fireside, and his absence more keenly felt by the family. Deceased was born in Zulfen, Holland, sixty-four years ago and came to this country in 1868 coming directly to Pella, Iowa, where he resided until 1870, when with the Holland colony he came to this county and has since lived in Orange City, being one of it's very earliest settlers. He was a stone mason by trade, and by industry and integrity he was prosperous and was making a good start in the world when his affliction - paralysis of the lower limbs - befel him, rendering him helpless for the rest of his life. He was married to Mrs. Cornelia Mak in 1873 and four children were born to them, all of whom are dead expect a daughter, Martha, fifteen years of age. He has 5 brothers and two sisters living - four of the former are still in Holland, and A. Lenderink of this city. The sisters live in California. Mr. Lenderink was not a member of church, but a believer in a divine being and died a christian death, and was resigned to the Master's will. During his long years of suffering he was patient and uncomplaining, and among the old settlers his memory will long live. The funeral occurred Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Reformed church, Rev. N. Kolyn conducting the services, and the remains were interred in the Orange City cemetery. The Herald commingles its sympathy with that of the entire community in condoling the bereaved family."
